If there is anyone out there who believes that even half of the trillion dollars the U.S. government has underwritten for student loans will ever be repaid, that bridge in Brooklyn is still for sale.
At a time when our country is so hopelessly in debt that bankruptcy is not only possible but likely in the not-too-distant future if we don’t begin to reign in spending, a good place to start would be the student loan program. And, since we will be honoring our veterans on Monday, maybe it is time tell high school grads that if they want the government to help them with college expenses, they will only be assisted if they have completed a stint in the armed forces.
President Kennedy said, “Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.” In keeping with that profound statement, I don’t think it would be asking too much of young people to earn their college financial assistance by first serving in the military to protect our country.
One very positive side-effect of such a system would be that after completing college young people would not be handed a $50,000-$100,000 mortgage on their financial future along with their diplomas.
